Pelvic floor therapy is a specialized type of therapy that focuses on the muscles, nerves, and joints that support your bladder, bowels, and reproductive organs. At our Southlake pelvic floor physical therapy clinic, we use pelvic floor therapy to help with bladder leaks, pelvic pain, painful sex, constipation, bowel issues, and pregnancy or postpartum changes. Instead of just masking symptoms, pelvic floor therapy works by identifying and treating the root cause of why those muscles aren’t working well in the first place—so your body can function more normally and comfortably.
Pelvic floor therapy can be highly effective for many people with bladder leaks and urinary incontinence, especially stress incontinence (leaks with coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercise) and urgency or overactive bladder. Through a combination of targeted pelvic floor exercises, breathing and pressure management, bladder training, and lifestyle strategies, many patients see a major reduction in leaks—and some experience full resolution. Results vary from person to person, but it’s one of the most evidence-supported, non-surgical ways to address incontinence.
Yes, pelvic floor therapy can be very helpful for many types of pelvic pain, including pain with sex, rectal or tailbone pain, and deep pelvic aching or burning. We look for overactive or tight pelvic floor muscles, irritated nerves, trigger points, and movement patterns that may be sensitizing your system. Treatment may include gentle internal and external manual therapy, down-training and relaxation strategies, nervous system calming techniques, and gradual return to comfortable movement and intimacy. While every situation is unique, many patients report less pain and more confidence in daily life and sexual activity.
In many mild to moderate cases, pelvic floor therapy can significantly improve prolapse symptoms and sometimes help you delay or avoid surgery. We focus on strengthening and coordinating the pelvic floor and deep core, optimizing posture and breathing, and teaching you how to manage pressure with lifting, exercise, and daily activity. Many people notice less heaviness, pressure, or “bulging” sensations and feel more supported with standing, walking, and being active. For more advanced prolapse, pelvic floor therapy can still be very valuable alongside pessary fitting or surgical consults.
Yes, when provided by a trained pelvic health therapist, pelvic floor therapy is considered safe during pregnancy and is commonly used to reduce pelvic, hip, and low-back pain. We tailor treatment to each trimester and your comfort level, focusing on gentle hands-on work, safe exercise, posture and body mechanics, and strategies to support your pelvic floor as your body changes. It can also help you prepare for labor and delivery by improving pelvic mobility, breath coordination, and awareness of how to relax and engage your pelvic floor when needed.
Yes—pelvic floor therapy is strongly recommended after childbirth, whether you had a vaginal delivery or a C-section. Many of our postpartum patients from Southlake and the surrounding DFW area come to us with bladder leakage, core weakness, pelvic pain, or a feeling of heaviness or instability. If this sounds like you, this is exactly what pelvic floor therapy is designed to help with. We focus on restoring pelvic floor and core strength, improving bladder control, addressing scar tissue, and helping you return to exercise, intimacy, and daily life with confidence and support.
