What is pelvic floor therapy?

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized treatment that focuses on the pelvic region, including muscles, ligaments, nerves, joints, and organs such as the bladder, reproductive system, and bowel. It effectively addresses issues like bladder and bowel dysfunction, sexual health concerns, and orthopedic conditions like low back, hip, and abdominal pain.

At The Pelvic Lab, our expert therapist is dedicated to treating pelvic health issues through a whole-body approach, addressing both the root cause and overall wellness.

How does Pelvic therapy look like?

Our pelvic floor therapy sessions incorporate various techniques, including manual therapy (external and internal, such as vaginal and rectal, though optional), dry needling, cupping, visceral mobilization (advanced hands-on techniques). We also focus on retraining your nervous system and muscles to improve movement, strength, and coordination. In addition, we provide anorectal balloon training to improve awareness of the anorectal area, restore defecation patterns while aiming to restore proper bowel function through improved coordination of the pelvic floor.

What to expect on your first visit? (Evaluation)

The first visit is an evaluation where we gather your medical history, assess strength, mobility, and posture, and if consented, a pelvic muscle exam. This is followed by education and treatment recommendations to resolve the root cause of your symptoms.

How long are my visits?

Each session is a full hour of one-on-one care with your pelvic health expert, focused on achieving your personalized goals and ensuring you feel your best. Your time and well-being are our priority.

What should I wear to my visits?

Feel free to wear whatever makes you comfortable. We recommend choosing clothing that allows you to move freely.

Can I attend pelvic PT while I'm on my period?

Yes, you can still attend pelvic PT during your period. If you're uncomfortable, your therapist can adjust the treatment for your comfort. Just let them know if you have any concerns. Your period will not interfere with your therapy sessions.

Can you help if I haven't seen improvement with other pelvic therapy?

Yes, we can help! Not all pelvic therapy is the same. We specialize in pelvic health and have extensive experience treating a wide range of pelvic health disorders, particularly complex conditions. We stay up-to-date with the latest, most effective treatments to ensure the best outcomes. Whether it's a simple concern or a more challenging issue.

When can I start pelvic PT during pregnancy?

You can begin pelvic physical therapy at any stage of pregnancy, particularly if you're dealing with pain, bladder, bowel, or sexual issues. If you're symptom-free but want to support your pelvic health, it's best to start in the second trimester. We also offer Birth Prep and Push Lab sessions to help prepare your body for labor and delivery, minimizing the risk of birth trauma.

Do I need a referral?

In Texas, you don't need a referral to begin pelvic physical therapy for the first 10 business days. After that, a referral is required. As a courtesy, we can help request a referral from your doctor, midwife, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant after your initial appointment.

Do you take insurance?

The Pelvic Lab specializes in high-quality care specific to your needs. We are out of network with insurance companies, here are the benefits of this approach:

  • 1-on-1 care with the same Doctor of Physical Therapy at every visit.

  • Transparent pricing with no surprise bills from insurance.

  • Unrestricted care: We dedicate more time to you, with each session focused on your specific needs, free from insurance constraints or limitations.

  • Preventative care This approach allows you to address pelvic health issues proactively, while insurance often only covers treatment after problems arise, frequently denying care or limiting your sessions.

  • No treatment restrictions—Without insurance limits or barriers, we can provide a personalized treatment plan tailored to your goals, ensuring effective care, helping you reach your full potential, and allowing you to complete your plan of care without interruptions.

  • Faster recovery—Begin your recovery now, without the hold-up of insurance approvals.

If needed and upon request, I can provide a receipt for you to submit to your insurance company for out-of-network reimbursement.
